Choosing a Christmas Color Scheme

October 30, 2022

Whether you love the traditional home that displays the classic red and green holiday color scheme, or if you want to try something new, I’m sharing plenty of ideas for you! The classic colors of Christmas will always be a staple but there are so many different ways you could be incorporating them. Let me help you choose a Christmas color scheme variation that will stun your guests and bring that Christmas Spirit roaring into your home.

A LOVE OF NEUTRALS

A neutral holiday decor style allows you to really play with the accent colors in different rooms. You can choose to go with the classic red & green, or go with something slightly out of the norm such as black and gold. Personally, I love playing with holiday plaids and using an abundance of pine greenery throughout my space to bring that warm and cozy feel inside. If you’d like to skip color all together, frosted silver and gold accents go hand in hand during the holiday season.

ACCENT COLOR

Have you ever noticed that some of your favorite homes with neutral Christmas decor typically have one thing in common? They all have one extremely bright and eye catching accent color elegantly trickled throughout the home! For some, it’s bright Christmas red, a gorgeous navy blue, and on my favorite occasion… it’s that deep forest green.

Using holiday greenery as your accent color is an incredible idea and so simple to incorporate. Green is a naturally eye catching color and something you can keep from fall through mid January.

PLAID

I know there’s a lot of you out there that simply adore plaid during the Holidays, and I completely understand why. When done correctly, it can look absolutely stunning. There’s few tips and tricks to incorporating this pattern throughout your space. Firstly, don’t overdo it. Different colors and different sizes of plaid patterns are not going to be aesthetically pleasing. When in doubt, pick large pattern plaid and try using a limited color palate. Pottery Barn currently has incredible variety of plaid decor, ranging from neutral browns & oatmeal, to muted versions of classic green and & reds. I’ve linked my favorite plaid items below!

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS

Small details make a large impact. Tray styling is a great way to add holiday colors to your kitchen island, your coffee table, and the entryway. A black nutcracker, a gold set of bells, or candle holders of either color are easy to incorporate in any space. Texture plays a key role in decor also, especially during the holiday season. Add larger decor pieces with delicate details like VELVET ribbon strung through the top of it. Large garlands that drape over your stair railing and fireplace mantle are simple and small additions that create a huge aesthetic outcome! Choosing a Christmas color scheme becomes so much easier when you implement the gold or black staple pieces first.
